Selecting an Institution and Program

Consider the following as you search for the graduate program that is right for you:

Program:Each school has a different curriculum and philosophy. Make sure they meet your educational goals.
Faculty:Research the reputation and areas of specialization for the faculty
Departments & Facilities: Certain institutions are known for their programs. Also consider the facilities they provide – do they meet your industry’s needs?
Size: There are advantages and disadvantages to both large and small institutions.
Placement: Where do graduates go?
Degree Requirements: Make a list of all requirements such as residency, examinations, languages, candidacy, thesis or dissertation
Application Process: What documents and/or exams are needed? Is there a GPA requirement or average

Application Checklist

Aim for the appropriate GPA – typically 3.0 or higher
Choose 2-3 individuals and request letters of recommendation. At least one reference should be a professor
Drafta statement of purpose. Have it reviewed by CPD and the Writing Center
Sign up and take admissions test. Look for CPD emails regarding free practice exams
Request transcripts
Apply – read all instructions carefully, follow directions and meet deadlines

Finance your Education

Browse and research fellowships, loans, assistantships, grants, and work-study options. Many require a separate application process.
Remember to fill out of the FAFSA.
